01 Materials

Types of Roofing Materials

The material on your roof affects everything: cost, lifespan, weight, and how well it holds up in Southern California's climate. Here are the four most common options you'll encounter.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common roofing material in the US and a solid choice for most LA County homes. Asphalt shingles are affordable, widely available, and come in a range of styles and colors. A quality shingle roof installed correctly will last 20–30 years. They handle heat reasonably well but can degrade faster in areas with extreme UV exposure if you go with a lower-grade product.

Concrete and Clay Tile

Tile roofs are the signature look of Southern California and for good reason. They perform exceptionally well in our climate. Clay and concrete tile are heavy, durable, and naturally resistant to heat, fire, and insects. A well-maintained tile roof can last 40–50 years or more. The trade-off is cost: tile installation is more labor-intensive and the material itself is more expensive than shingles.

Flat and Low-Slope Roofing

Common on modern homes, additions, and commercial properties, flat roofs require a different approach entirely. The most common systems are TPO, modified bitumen, and built-up roofing (BUR). Flat roofs are prone to pooling water if not properly sloped and drained, so installation quality matters enormously. Expect a lifespan of 15–25 years depending on the system and how well it's maintained.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has grown significantly in popularity for residential use. Standing seam metal roofs are durable, fire-resistant, and can last 40–70 years with minimal maintenance. They reflect heat well, which can reduce cooling costs in warm climates like ours. The upfront cost is higher than asphalt, but the long lifespan often makes it cost-effective over time.
